Jakarta, IDN Times – The Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) is set to offer free travel during the Christmas and New Year holidays (Nataru) in 2025, covering three modes of transportation: buses, trains, and ferries.
Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi announced that Kemenhub will provide a capacity for 38,772 travelers during this free travel initiative.
“For the Nataru period of 2024-2025, the Ministry of Transportation is implementing three free travel programs, accommodating a total of 38,772 passengers along with the provision for 2,320 motorcycles,” said the Minister during a working meeting with Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives in Jakarta on Wednesday (December 4, 2024).

1. Details of Free Travel Routes
Specifically, the Directorate General of Land Transportation will offer 11 free travel routes from Jakarta, leading to destinations such as Solo, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Wonosobo, Semarang, Wonogiri, Cilacap, Purwokerto, Malang, Madiun, and Kediri.
“Additionally, there will be a route from Jakarta Gudang to Lempuyangan, which includes stops at Jakarta Gudang Station, Cirebon Prujakan Station, Purwokerto Station, Kutoarjo Station, and Lempuyangan Station,” he explained.

2. Kemenhub Prepares 88 Bus Units
Kemenhub will deploy 88 bus units along with 2 trucks, catering to 3,500 passengers. During this free travel event, Dudy stated that seating will be available for 5,300 passengers and 2,320 motorcycles, with a free motorcycle transport period lasting 10 days.

3. Kemenhub Projects Public Movement During Nataru to Reach 110.67 Million
Furthermore, Dudy anticipates that the public movement during the Christmas and New Year period will reach 39.3 percent, translating to 110.67 million individuals.
The majority, 53.8 percent, are expected to opt for personal vehicles.
“This potential movement is based on a survey conducted from October 23 to 30, 2024,” he noted.
Dudy detailed that interprovincial travel is projected to be 19.84 percent, or about 55.86 million travelers, while intraprovincial travel is estimated at 19.46 percent, or approximately 54.81 million.
Among the reasons for traveling during the holiday season, 45.63 percent are headed to tourist spots, 32.36 percent are returning home, 19.96 percent are celebrating Christmas and New Year in their hometowns, and 2 percent are on business or work assignments.
Regarding transportation choices, Dudy indicated that around 59.52 million people, or 53.78 percent, will likely use personal vehicles.
“As for public transportation usage, the corrected data predicts that 6.54 million will use buses, 3.44 million will travel by intercity trains, 4.14 million will take flights, 3.40 million will use ferries, and 2.38 million will opt for sea transportation,” he explained.
