Makassar, CNN Indonesia —
Wali Kota Makassar, Moh Ramdhan Pomanto has promised rewards for residents who can help address the floods that have inundated various areas across four districts.
The affected areas include the Manggala, Biringkanaya, Tamalanrea, and Panakkukang districts.
“If anyone can find a solution to the flooding, let me know, and I will reward them for their efforts,” Danny, as he is commonly known, stated while visiting the flood-affected areas on Sunday (22/12).
He highlighted that the Manggala district, particularly blocks 8 and 10 of Perumnas Antang, frequently experiences annual flooding. This is due to the residents’ homes being situated in the lowest points and along water flow paths.
“It floods every year because this area is a basin, so whenever it rains heavily, flooding is inevitable,” he explained.
According to Danny, the current floods are a result of significant rainfall, noting that not only Makassar is affected, but several cities globally are facing flooding due to extreme weather conditions.
“From what I know, flooding is a global issue right now; Singapore experienced severe flooding last month, Malaysia is also affected, as are the United States and Japan. So, if anyone claims they can manage or stop the flooding, we need their help. We require expertise and knowledge,” he expressed.
Nevertheless, Danny emphasized that the Makassar city government remains committed to addressing the flooding situation in the four affected districts and ensuring that the impacted residents receive assistance from the government.
“We must also attend to the needs of the evacuees, especially children and the elderly. I came today to ensure that all evacuees are being cared for properly,” he added.
Previously, the number of residents affected by the flooding in Makassar, South Sulawesi, has been steadily increasing. As of tonight, the number of individuals seeking refuge in 28 evacuation centers has reached 1,969.
“Yes, the number of residents affected by the floods and who have evacuated has reached 515 families or approximately 1,969 individuals,” stated Achmad Hendra Hakamuddin, the head of the Makassar BPBD, to CNNIndonesia.com on Sunday (22/12).
According to Achmad, the thousands of residents impacted by the floods come from eight urban villages across the four districts currently submerged in water, namely Biringkanaya, Manggala, Panakkukang, and Tamalanrea.
“The flooding is still concentrated in these four districts, and we have set up 28 evacuation tents in the disaster-stricken areas,” he confirmed.
