Gregoria Mariska Tunjung has advanced to the semifinals of the India Open 2025 after defeating local favorite Pusarla Venkata Sindhu on Friday (January 17).
Competing at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in New Delhi, Gregoria started strong right from the first game, quickly taking a commanding lead of 5-0.
This early advantage set the stage for Gregoria to control the match effectively, leading 11-5 midway through the game and ultimately winning decisively with a score of 21-9.
In the second game, Gregoria continued to exhibit her dominance, initially pulling ahead 9-3. However, Sindhu gradually closed the gap, managing to equalize at 9-9.
Although Gregoria briefly regained the lead at 10-9, Sindhu responded by leveling the score again at 10-10, eventually taking the advantage at 11-10 as they headed into the break.
After the interval, the match intensified, with Sindhu momentarily leading 14-10, but Gregoria fought back to tie the score at 14-14.
Once again, the scores were level at 17-17, but Sindhu capitalized on crucial points, securing the game 21-19.
The third game saw an exhilarating back-and-forth battle. Gregoria started strong, leading 2-0, but Sindhu turned the tables to go ahead 4-2.
Gregoria then reclaimed the lead at 6-4, only for Sindhu to equalize at 6-6. Nevertheless, Gregoria, affectionately known as Jorji, managed to lead 11-9 at the midway point.
Following the break, the score remained tight, but Gregoria successfully closed out the tense match with a final score of 21-17.
This victory marks a significant shift in their head-to-head record, with Gregoria reducing the gap to 4-10 in their 14 encounters.
