Jakarta, IDN Times – The latest data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) reveals that the export of basic metals has seen remarkable growth from January to September 2024, compared to the same period last year.
Overall, the net weight of basic metal exports surged by 23.38 percent, increasing from 16.95 million tons to 20.92 million tons. In terms of export value, there was a recorded rise of 7.52 percent, reaching 33.09 billion USD.
1. Nickel: A Key Driver of Export Growth
Recent data from BPS indicates that the net weight of nickel exports experienced a remarkable increase of 60.54 percent, rising from 823 thousand tons in the same period (January-September) of 2023 to 1.32 million tons in 2024.
Not only in terms of volume, but the export value of nickel also displayed positive growth. The Free on Board (FOB) value of nickel increased by 11.16 percent, from 5.08 billion USD in January-September 2023 to 5.65 billion USD in the same period this year. This figure equates to Rp89.27 trillion (exchange rate: Rp15,800 per USD).

Here is the positive performance of basic metal exports during January-September 2024:
Nickel:
Net weight: up 60.54 percent, from 823 thousand tons to 1.32 million tons.
Export value (FOB): up 11.16 percent, from 5.08 billion USD to 5.65 billion USD.

Aluminum:
Net weight: down 7.99 percent, from 352 thousand tons to 324 thousand tons.
Export value (FOB): up 87.56 percent, from 454 million USD to 852 million USD.
Tin:
Net weight: down 40.43 percent, from 49.7 thousand tons to 29.6 thousand tons.
Export value (FOB): down 28.87 percent, from 1.31 billion USD to 930 million USD.
Bauxite:
No exports recorded in 2024.
