Jakarta, IDN Times – Indonesia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sugiono, has expressed strong support for the recent ceasefire agreement in Palestine. He emphasized the need for immediate and comprehensive implementation of this agreement to allow the Palestinian people to rebuild their lives.
“Indonesia urges for the swift and complete execution of this ceasefire, enabling the Palestinian community to start restoring their livelihoods,” Sugiono stated during the ASEAN Foreign Ministers Retreat (AMM Retreat) held in Langkawi, Malaysia, on Sunday, January 19, 2025.
1. Peace Process Towards a Two-State Solution
Minister Sugiono firmly stated that lasting peace in Palestine can only be achieved if Israel ends its illegal occupation and a sovereign Palestinian state is established.
“We must continue to advocate for the resumption of the peace process leading to a Two-State Solution based on internationally agreed parameters,” he added.

Within ASEAN, Minister Sugiono highlighted the increasing competition among major powers, which poses a threat to regional stability. He underscored the need for ASEAN to maintain unity and take proactive steps to ensure stability and prosperity in the region.
To this end, Sugiono called for strengthening ASEAN mechanisms and institutions, including the ASEAN Regional Forum, East Asia Forum, and the ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (AIPR). He also emphasized the importance of respecting regional principles and norms, such as the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation and the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific, to secure regional stability.
3. ASEAN Must Intensify Support for Myanmar
Regarding the situation in Myanmar, Sugiono stressed that ASEAN must intensify its efforts to assist Myanmar in resolving its ongoing crisis. He also expressed full support for the ASEAN Chair’s Special Envoy to drive the implementation of the Five Point Consensus.
This year, Malaysia holds the ASEAN chairmanship and has adopted the theme of “Inclusivity and Sustainability.” This theme underscores ASEAN’s commitment to enhancing peace, stability, and prosperity in the region through inclusive, sustainable, and forward-looking approaches.
